Reduction Linocut: Multi-Color Prints from a Single Block
The reduction print method (also known as the „suicide print“ or „lost block“ technique) allows you to create a multi-colored artwork using only one single linoleum block. The core principle is simple: the block is carved further after each color layer, gradually and irreversibly „reducing“ the printing surface.
Because the carved-away areas are gone forever, you cannot rerun the edition later. This makes every reduction print run an exclusive, limited edition.
Planning & Creating a Color Palette
Before printing, you need to plan a well-coordinated color palette. Because inks are layered on top of each other, the process always moves from the lightest color to the darkest.
For example, you might start with a light yellow, move to light blue, then progress to mid-tones like orange or sky blue, and finish with a dark brown or black. Every color must match and blend well with the layers underneath.
The entire paper edition goes through this exact sequence together, so you cannot make changes later. Well-mixed, oil-based ink has a smooth consistency like thick honey. When rolled out with a brayer, it creates a fine, velvety texture, showing that it is ready for the block.
Carving Steps & Color Gradients
Every step of the reduction process needs careful planning. Each layer often contains multiple colors or smooth color gradients.
This means you are not just using one flat color per step. Before you carve, you must decide exactly where the color gradients will go and which parts you need to cut away to protect the previous layer. A single mistake in the carving order or a wrong color transition affects the whole print.
